Illinois advocates have filed a lawsuit against federal authorities, alleging “inhumane” conditions at a Chicago-area ICE facility known as Broadview. The suit, brought forth by the ACLU of Illinois and the MacArthur Justice Center, claims that individuals detained there are denied private access to legal counsel and subjected to oppressive living conditions, with reports of overcrowding and unsanitary environments including clogs and fecal odors.
Lead attorney Alexa Van Brunt emphasizes that the treatment of detainees—including forced signing of documents they do not understand—violates their constitutional rights. The 76-page complaint paints a dire picture of the facility, with accounts of individuals crammed into small spaces and deprived of basic necessities. Advocates assert that these troubling conditions have garnered attention from multiple quarters, highlighting the urgent need for reform within the immigration detention system.
