Authorities Address Rise in Modified Handguns

Authorities in the Kansas City region are intensifying efforts to address the growing concern over modified handguns, specifically those altered into automatic weapons using illegal devices known as auto-sears. John Ham, a spokesman for the ATF, reports that these modifications, which can easily be purchased online from overseas, present significant dangers due to their concealability and lethal potential.

Ham emphasizes the urgent need to remove these devices from circulation, given that possessing an auto-sear can lead to a felony charge with penalties of up to ten years in prison. Although no auto-sears have been found on criminal weapons in the Kansas City metro area thus far, the trend of illegal modifications is rising nationwide, prompting authorities to encourage individuals who may unintentionally own these devices to contact the ATF for assistance.
