Barbershops in Durham Launch Initiative to Curb Gun Violence

In a groundbreaking effort to combat gun violence among youth, barbershops in Durham, North Carolina, have teamed up with Duke University and local leaders to launch the Durham Impact Project. This initiative aims to provide young men with mentorship and guidance in a safe environment, using barbershops as a community hub for open discussions and support. Local barber Len Lilly, who has experienced firsthand the tragic loss of young lives, emphasizes the significance of creating constructive conversations among men to deter violence.

Recently, Durham police reported that at least seven children have been shot this year alone, raising concerns over the increasing involvement of younger suspects in such incidents. The project not only seeks to connect these youths with necessary resources but also aims to establish a strong social support system. With support from figures like Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams, local barbers are being recognized for their influential role in the community, with Lilly stating, “It doesn’t always have to revert to violence.”
