Bay Area Military Site Vandalized with Hate Speech

A historic military landmark in the Marin Headlands, the SF-88 Nike missile site, is the target of vandalism involving hate speech and hazardous chemicals. The National Park Service reports that the incident occurred between March 15 and March 19, resulting in extensive damage including bigoted graffiti and the spillage of hazardous materials that could pose health risks to those involved.

The National Park Service is actively seeking tips from the public, asking visitors to share any photos or video footage taken near Battery Alexander or the missile site during the vandalism window. Established during the Cold War as a defense against potential aerial threats, the SF-88 Nike missile site was part of a network of about 300 similar installations across the U.S., operating from the 1950s until its decommissioning in 1971.
