A Binghamton man, Dekwaun Hicks, is sentenced to six years in New York State prison for attempted criminal possession of a weapon after a traffic stop uncovered a loaded firearm. Officers from the Broome County Special Investigations Unit obtained information about Hicks’s possession of a gun, leading to the discovery of a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, additional ammunition, and methamphetamine pills during the June 2024 vehicle stop.
Originally expecting a three-year sentence due to a lesser initial charge, Hicks’s case escalated following a subsequent arrest on drug-related charges while out on bail. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti emphasizes the importance of accountability in weapons-related offenses, stating that the case serves as a clear warning against illegal firearm possession in the community.
