A 19-year-old Fort Greene resident, Wesley Walker, is sentenced to 18 years to life in prison following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Unique Smith in a Brooklyn park. The incident occurred in broad daylight on September 7, 2022, while Smith was sitting on a bench near his school. Walker, a gang member, approached Smith and, after a brief confrontation, shot him in the stomach, resulting in Smith’s death shortly after at a local hospital.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez emphasized the lasting impact of gun violence on families and communities, noting that despite a decline in overall gun violence, one life lost is one too many. Testimony revealed that Walker, prior to the shooting, cut class and gathered several students to witness his display of a firearm, indicating a premeditated attack. With this conviction, the court aims to hold perpetrators accountable for senseless acts of violence.
