Broward Man Awarded $1.7M After Wrongful Conviction

Sidney Holmes, a Broward County man who spent 34 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, is set to receive $1.7 million in compensation. Convicted in 1989 for being the getaway driver in a robbery, Holmes, now 57, was declared innocent following a review by the Broward County State Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit, which found significant flaws in eyewitness identification linked to the case.

Despite being released last year, Holmes initially did not qualify for compensation due to prior criminal history. However, a claims bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has secured him the payout, reflecting state recognition of his wrongful conviction. Holmes expresses his hope that his experience can inspire others, saying, “If you’re innocent… never give up,” as he also embarks on a journey to advocate for justice reform through writing and foundation work.
