Changes to Nonresident Deer and Elk Tag System in Idaho

Idaho is changing its hunting regulations by eliminating over-the-counter deer and elk tags for nonresident hunters starting next year. Instead, these out-of-state hunters will need to purchase a nonrefundable $185 hunting license and enter a drawing for the chance to receive a tag, reflecting a growing demand for hunting opportunities in the state.

Officials note that previously available nonresident tags have become increasingly scarce, with many popular hunts selling out within hours. The new system will allow nonresidents to select up to five hunts for each species they are interested in and collaborate with other licensed hunters during the application process. For those who don’t win a tag, Idaho’s regulations still offer options for bird and upland game hunting, ensuring that even unsuccessful applicants can enjoy their hunting experience.
