Today, volunteers from the charity Military vs Cancer are passing through the Burnham-on-Sea area as part of their ambitious campaign to pull a one-tonne field gun 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End. Since beginning their challenge on September 1, the group has raised over £60,000, with a target of £150,000 aimed at supporting service men and women battling cancer.
Warrant Officer David Bathgate, the charity’s founder, shares his motivational drive stemming from personal losses to cancer, stating, “We turn to each other and help each other out.” As 1,300 volunteers drag the artillery piece, many are burning up to 7,000 calories a day, revealing the physical toll and the commitment behind this noteworthy initiative that also seeks to encourage military personnel to seek necessary health support.
