A civil trial has commenced in Austin to address the controversial police shooting of Alex Gonzales Jr. in 2021, with plaintiffs alleging that off-duty officer Gabriel Gutierrez misled investigators. The trial will examine whether Gonzales’ death, which occurred during a road rage incident, was justifiable, amid claims that the Austin Police Department inadequately investigated the shooting, allowing Gutierrez to act without fear of disciplinary action.
During the trial’s opening day, plaintiffs’ attorney Donald Puckett contended that Gutierrez’s misleading statements to the 911 operator led to further violence, as responding officer Luis Serrato fatally shot Gonzales, believing him to be a threat. Notably, just days before the trial, significant evidence was disclosed by the city, raising questions about the thoroughness of the prior investigation and including a draft report critical to the case.
