The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has launched “Operation Safe Season,” a new initiative focused on enhancing safety in uptown Charlotte. Over its inaugural weekend, the operation led to the arrest of 18 individuals and the seizure of 14 firearms, as CMPD works in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies to combat rising crime rates.
Notably, CMPD’s efforts come at a time when aggravated assaults in the Central Division, which encompasses uptown, have surged by 15% this year, alongside a troubling increase in homicides from four last year to ten this year. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to reducing crime and has already garnered positive feedback from the community, with officers reportedly receiving numerous thank-yous from local residents and visitors.
