Colorado’s New Concealed Handgun Law Sparks Controversy

Colorado’s new concealed handgun law, HB24-1174, went into effect on July 1, 2025, mandating that new applicants complete an eight-hour training course, including a live-fire exercise and a written exam. Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams has publicly denounced the law as an infringement on Second Amendment rights, stating it imposes “ridiculous regulations” and is unlikely to enhance public safety.

This legislation not only impacts new applicants but also requires existing permit holders to complete a refresher course or demonstrate firearm proficiency. As public interest surges, with record numbers visiting the sheriff’s office ahead of the law’s implementation, House Majority Leader Monica Duran emphasizes the importance of proper training to ensure community safety. New regulations for gun dealers were also enacted on the same day, adding a state licensing requirement.
