Columbus Police Launch Self-Defense Classes for Women

The Columbus Police Department is taking proactive steps to reduce violence against women by offering female self-defense classes starting September 26. With alarming statistics indicating that nearly 70 women are killed by their partners each month with firearms, the initiative aims to empower participants through education on self-defense techniques and firearm safety.

These two-day classes focus on enhancing women’s self-awareness and confidence, with messages from law enforcement emphasizing that while firearms can be a viable option, women should also be equipped with knowledge of alternative self-defense tools like tasers and pepper spray. Lieutenant Kelly Phillips notes the importance of understanding options, as women are statistically five times more likely to experience violent crimes. Interested participants are encouraged to register soon, as seating is limited to 25.
