Community Initiative Launched After Detroit Shooting

In response to a devastating shooting incident that left a 4-year-old and an 18-year-old dead, community organizations in Detroit have launched the “Protect the Zone” initiative. Led by Quincy Smith of Team Pursuit, the program focuses on engaging young people in summer activities and providing resources to families in the east side community devastated by the violence. The initiative aims to mobilize support as canvassing efforts begin in homes near the shooting scene, highlighting an urgent need for community-led violence prevention.

This initiative follows the tragic events at Skinner Playfield, where families now seek both safety and an engagement plan for youth ages 12 to 17. Smith stresses the importance of not letting kids remain idle during summer, while parents are encouraged to participate in training to support their children. Participating organizations, including Force Detroit and Beat the Odds, see this collaborative effort as essential to reducing violence and fostering a safer environment for families in the city.
