Community Programs Reduce Gun Violence by 21%

A recent report from New York City Comptroller Brad Lander reveals that community violence intervention programs have led to a 21% reduction in shootings in areas where they are implemented. This success is quantified as preventing an estimated 1,567 shootings from 2012 to 2024, showcasing the vital role of community-led initiatives in combating gun violence.

However, the report titled “The Cure for Crisis” emphasizes the need for better oversight and quicker funding to enhance these programs’ effectiveness. Significant hurdles remain, including extended reimbursement delays for violence prevention organizations, which have seen average wait times nearly double since 2016, putting the stability of these critical initiatives at risk.
