The Educators for Gun Safety (EGS) initiative at Confluence Academies has been awarded the FOCUS St. Louis 2025 What’s Right With the Region Award in the Emerging Initiatives category. This recognition highlights EGS’s commitment to educating students and the community about gun safety, addressing the alarming rise in gun-related incidents among children in the St. Louis area.
Founded in 2022, EGS has implemented various programs, including the distribution of free gun locks and a comprehensive gun safety curriculum that reaches every student in Confluence Academies. With events like Gun Safety Day and a student-led Gun Safety Panel, the initiative not only informs but empowers students to advocate for policy change, including a proposed state task force. “EGS is not just about education, it’s about empowering students, shifting culture, and saving lives,” says Dr. Candice Carter-Oliver, CEO of Confluence Academies.
