Cortez Masto Calls for Action on Gun Trafficking

U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is calling for immediate federal measures to address the illegal trafficking of firearms across the U.S. southern border. In a letter co-signed by three fellow Senate Democrats, she urges the Trump administration to leverage the recent designation of Latin American drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations to combat the smuggling of an estimated 200,000 to 500,000 American-made guns into Mexico each year, which heavily equips these criminal groups.

The letter highlights the potential legal tools now available to disrupt cartel operations, asserting that current laws allow for severe penalties against those who support foreign terrorist organizations. Cortez Masto expressed her hope that swift action will be taken to utilize these powers effectively, emphasizing the urgency of tackling this critical issue to enhance national security.
