A Spruce Pine man, Joshua Paul Menard Sr., is arrested after bringing a concealed firearm onto the grounds of Mitchell County Middle School on October 17. School Resource Officer Steve Turbyfill intervenes when he notices Menard with a pistol visibly protruding from his pocket, leading to the discovery of a second firearm in his vehicle.
Menard’s wife, Christine Richard Menard, is also charged in connection with the incident. The couple faces multiple charges, including carrying a weapon on educational property and simple possession of marijuana, with a bond set at $5,000 each. Despite possessing a concealed carry permit, Menard was required to secure his weapon in a locked compartment while on school property, highlighting the nuances of concealed carry regulations. Their first court appearance is scheduled for November 24.
