Elijah Porter, a 20-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., receives a significant prison sentence of over eight years for his involvement in two armed robberies facilitated through Facebook Marketplace. The sentence, handed down by Superior Court Judge Deborah Israel, comes after Porter’s guilty plea to charges of armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, stemming from crimes that took place in late 2023.
In a deceitful twist, Porter exploited a fake Facebook profile to lure victims under the guise of purchasing electronic devices, only to use threats of violence to rob them. In one instance, he arranged a meeting to buy a MacBook, during which he brandished what appeared to be a handgun and fled with the stolen item. Authorities successfully apprehended Porter shortly after, recovering the stolen merchandise, a sign of their commitment to addressing crimes linked to modern online marketplaces.
