With ghost guns constituting only 13% of firearms recovered in 2024—a decrease from 25% in 2021—law enforcement is making progress, yet the threat remains significant, as highlighted by the recent shooting of a police officer with a ghost gun by a convicted felon.
The current law treats the possession and manufacture of ghost guns as misdemeanors, a situation Stephan aims to change to better address public safety concerns. Despite existing local and state regulations, there are no additional sentencing enhancements for crimes involving ghost guns, which she believes undermines efforts to tackle the issue effectively. Law enforcement agencies are actively collaborating to tackle this challenge, making strides in removing these weapons from the streets.
