Danville’s Crime Rates Continue to Decline

The Danville Police Department reports a notable 8% drop in major crimes, marking five years of consecutive crime reductions in the city. Chief Chris Wiles highlights a significant focus on reducing gun violence, which has led to decreased rates of shootings and thefts; however, there was a slight uptick in homicides, with nine reported in 2024 compared to seven in the previous year.

Community-based policing initiatives have played a key role in this success, according to Chief Wiles, who initially underestimated the positive impact of relationship-building between officers and residents. The department has implemented over 30 community programs, such as “Coffee with a Cop” and the Youth Police Academy, aimed at preventing crime through engagement. Chief Wiles confirms that these efforts are essential for sustained safety, as the department continues to refine its approach to meet changing community needs.
