Northland hunter and photographer David Towgood has been awarded the title of winner for the 2025 Game Bird Habitat Stamp competition, marking his second consecutive victory. His striking image of a pūkeko in flight has been chosen to grace the coveted stamp, which is included on game bird hunting licenses and represents a significant contribution to conservation efforts in New Zealand.
Since the program’s establishment, hunters have helped raise over $2.4 million for wetland conservation projects through the Game Bird Habitat Trust. Towgood, who has 40 years of hunting experience and 25 years of bird photography, emphasizes the importance of capturing birds in flight, likening his photographic technique to his hunting methods. His achievement not only highlights his passion for wildlife photography but also underscores the critical role hunters play in preserving New Zealand’s natural habitats.
