Community members in Davis gather in Central Park to observe Trans Day of Remembrance, paying tribute to transgender individuals who have lost their lives to violence and suicide over the past year. This year’s observance highlights the grim statistic that 58 transgender people died from Nov. 1, 2024, to Oct. 31, 2025, including 27 fatalities resulting from violent acts, primarily gun violence targeting Black trans women.
The ceremony, organized by the Davis Phoenix Coalition, features poignant tributes such as a roll call of names and the display of portraits honoring each individual lost. Attendees include local leaders and advocates, who address the pressing issues facing trans youth, including increased bullying and the social effects of targeted legislation. “Discrimination incites an environment where deadly violence against our community flourishes,” emphasizes a spokesperson for the coalition, underscoring the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and equality.
