DC Police Identify Man Shot After Knife Incident

Washington D.C. police have identified 29-year-old Surafel Zerihun as the man fatally shot by officers on Georgia Avenue after a violent confrontation on Tuesday evening. The incident began when Zerihun crashed his vehicle into a police cruiser, subsequently exiting the car while brandishing a knife and demanding the officer’s firearm, leading to a tense and escalating altercation.

During the confrontation, Zerihun attempted to carjack another vehicle despite still being armed, prompting a second officer to fire their weapon, fatally wounding him. Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as investigations continue, including the review of body camera footage from the incident. This event marks a significant escalation of police-involved shootings in the area, raising community concerns and prompting calls for more information.
