A deer hunter in northeastern Minnesota, Dane Landon Nelson, faces charges for illegally shooting a moose, a protected species in the state. With Minnesota’s moose population declining dramatically—having dropped to about 4,040 from nearly 9,000 in 2006—the state has not allowed moose hunting since 2012. Nelson reportedly mistook the moose for a deer while hunting on the opening day of the firearms deer season.
After the shooting, Nelson admitted his mistake in a text message to another hunter, stating, “I [expletive] up and shot a moose.” Additionally, DNR officers reported observing signs of intoxication, as Nelson’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit for driving. His case highlights ongoing concerns over wildlife conservation and responsible hunting practices in Minnesota.
