Cpl. Freddie Stowers, who fought valiantly during World War I, is finally recognized with the Medal of Honor—73 years after his death. Stowers led his men during a fierce battle on Sept. 28, 1918, despite sustaining mortal wounds, earning the respect of his fellow soldiers and a posthumous Croix de Guerre from the French army.
His act of heroism, along with that of Pvt. Burton Holmes, was initially overshadowed when documentation recommending them for the Medal of Honor was claimed lost by the American Expeditionary Forces. A reevaluation of minority servicemen’s contributions led to the eventual recognition of Stowers on April 24, 1991, bringing a long-overdue honor to his legacy and ensuring he will be remembered at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.
