In the wake of a devastating shooting at Florida State University that resulted in two fatalities and six injuries, Democratic lawmakers in Florida are urgently calling for gun reform measures. With just two weeks remaining in the legislative session, proposals to strengthen background checks and limit ammunition sales are gaining momentum, though their success remains uncertain amid looming deadlines.
House Minority Leader Rep. Fentrice Driskell highlights the need for immediate action, suggesting that if the legislature can focus on renaming geographical features, it can certainly address gun violence, one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. As classes resume and students grapple with the trauma of the incident, the proposed reforms include new safety measures for college classrooms that advocate locking doors, which are currently only enforced in K-12 institutions. However, with critical Senate committee meetings coming to an end, many of these initiatives might be set aside until the 2026 legislative session.
