Two men shot by Denver police in late August were wielding replica firearms, with one of them killed and the other hospitalized. In separate incidents, the first shooting involved 48-year-old Javier Nava Carbajal, who was shot after a confrontation with police while holding a BB gun that resembled a real firearm. Investigators revealed the gun was loaded with live rounds but incapable of firing, prompting police officials to highlight the risks associated with replica weapons.
The second shooting involved 62-year-old Allen Scott, who pointed an airsoft gun at passing vehicles. Despite police efforts to negotiate, he was shot in the face after failing to comply with commands. Both incidents occurred within a few days, catalyzing discussions on the alarming trend of using replica firearms in potentially deadly situations. Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas expressed concern, stating that these replicas are often indistinguishable from real guns, complicating police responses.
