Wisconsin health officials advise against consuming mallard ducks from lower Green Bay after tests reveal contamination with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In a detailed advisory, they suggest limiting mallard duck consumption from the northern part of the area to just one meal per month due to elevated PFAS levels, while allowing for wooden ducks at one meal per week.
The advisory is based on sampling conducted between 2022 and 2024, which found higher PFAS concentrations in both adult and juvenile ducks from the lower bay compared to the northern regions. PFAS, often labeled as “forever chemicals,” are linked to serious health risks, including increased cancer risk and potential reproductive issues. This alert extends beyond ducks, with similar consumption guidelines for fish and deer in Oneida County.
