Durham County Sees Overall Crime Decrease

A new report from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office reveals an overall decline in crime rates over the past five years. Notably, property crimes have decreased by 27% since 2020, with the sheriff’s office reporting only 470 incidents in 2024.

While violent crime, including serious offenses such as murder and robbery, also sees a 4% reduction compared to last year, the report indicates a concerning rise in firearm incidents, with 304 guns seized. This information coincides with Mayor Leonardo Williams’ commitment to address youth gun violence as a public health issue, promising continued efforts to find solutions for this pressing challenge.
