A Lake Criminal Court judge sentences Justin Gomez, 27, to five years in prison for shooting a man during a fight outside the Shades of Time bar in Griffith. The incident, described by Judge Samuel Cappas as yet another example of “senseless gun violence,” occurred when Gomez instigated a brawl and then fired shots at a victim trying to de-escalate the situation, resulting in severe injuries.
Gomez, already on probation for a similar crime, pleaded guilty to charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a handgun. His actions left the victim with life-altering injuries, including the loss of a kidney and part of his liver. In his victim impact statement, the victim described the profound emotional toll of the incident, which he says has overshadowed his life since the attack.
