El Mirage Police Release Bodycam Footage of Fatal Shooting

El Mirage Police have released bodycam footage from October 8, showing the fatal shooting of an armed man, Jeremy Preckel, who was reportedly suicidal. During a 14-minute 911 call, Preckel informed dispatchers of his intentions, expressively stating he wished police would shoot him. When officers arrived, they attempted to de-escalate the situation by issuing over 20 commands for him to drop his weapon, but ultimately, the confrontation resulted in Preckel being shot as he approached them with a rifle.

Experts like retired Phoenix Police Commander Jeff Hynes commented on the tragic nature of the incident, pointing out the challenges officers face in crisis situations where non-lethal options are limited. Hynes highlighted the absence of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) at the scene, suggesting that more resources focused on mental health could help reduce police-involved shootings. The investigation into the incident continues through the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
