El Paso County recently conducted its final gun buyback event, just ahead of the implementation of House Bill 3053, which restricts local governments from organizing similar initiatives. This law, signed by Governor Greg Abbott, will come into effect on September 1, 2025, marking the end of community programs aimed at encouraging firearm surrender without prosecution.
During this event, over 1,200 guns have been collected across four buyback days, with participants receiving gift cards in exchange. County Commissioner Jackie Butler highlighted the importance of these events in addressing gun-related suicides and promoting firearm safety, particularly in households with children. The program, funded mainly through federal and state money, seeks to mitigate the risks posed by unwanted firearms and educate the community on safe gun storage practices.
