Ensuring Safety During Playdates: Gun Safety Talks Needed

As summer leads to increased playdates for children, experts stress the critical need for parents to initiate conversations about firearm safety at other households. The CDC reports that accidental shootings are a leading cause of death among U.S. children and teens, with at least 84 incidents this year alone resulting in 37 fatalities and 47 injuries. Dr. Kiesha Fraser Doh advocates for asking whether guns are present and how they are secured before playdates, framing these inquiries as essential to ensuring children’s safety rather than challenging parents’ beliefs about firearm ownership.

This proactive approach, akin to asking about food allergies or swimming pools, can be a lifesaving habit. Experts recommend securing firearms unloaded and separate from ammunition, while also noting that inadequate storage often leads to accidental access by children. Fraser highlights that having the talk doesn’t mean making assumptions about the safety practices of others, but it empowers parents to prioritize their child’s safety first. If answers regarding firearm security are unsatisfactory, it may be wise to make alternative plans for playdates.
