Erie City Council Targets Ghost Gun Production with New Penalties

The Erie City Council is moving forward with proposed legal penalties aimed at curbing the production and distribution of ghost guns within the city. As law enforcement has seized tens of thousands of these untraceable firearms since 2016, the council emphasizes the need for local legislation to address this growing public safety concern, particularly as many of these guns are being manufactured using accessible 3D printing technology.

Council Vice President Tyler Titus highlights that current federal laws do not sufficiently cover issues related to 3D-printed guns, which can be assembled by individuals with basic know-how. By drawing inspiration from measures taken by other municipalities in Pennsylvania, Erie aims to implement a framework that promotes responsible gun ownership and includes penalties for illegal manufacturing, potentially involving fines or jail time for violators. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat youth access to firearms in the community.
