Estonia has entered an agreement with the United States to acquire six additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) as it boosts its military capabilities in response to neighboring Russia’s aggression. This follows the delivery of six HIMARS units earlier this year, underscoring the country’s urgent need for enhanced deep strike abilities, as illustrated by Ukraine’s effective use of the system in its resistance against Russian forces.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur emphasizes the importance of such capabilities, noting they are essential for deterring potential threats and for responding effectively in a conflict scenario. With other Baltic states like Latvia and Lithuania also investing in HIMARS to counter Russian posturing, Estonia’s expansion of its artillery arsenal reflects a broader commitment among NATO allies to strengthen defense along the eastern flank of the alliance.
