Expert Discusses Youth Violence and Prevention Strategies

Dr. Daniel Flannery, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, emphasizes the critical need for early intervention to combat youth violence in a recent presentation at the University of Virginia. Flannery shares alarming statistics from his research, revealing that approximately one in five children aged six and under have been exposed to violence, either as a victim or a witness.

During his talk, titled “Challenges to Positive Youth Development: Violence and Mental Health in Everyday Life,” he highlights a correlation between unrestricted gun access and youth violence, particularly in school shootings. Flannery advocates for common-sense gun laws and calls for society to prioritize safety over the ease of access to firearms, stating that early identification and intervention can help break the “cycle of violence” that plagues many young individuals.
