Experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions have released a Model Policy Guide aimed at assisting lawmakers in developing effective safe firearm storage laws. This comprehensive guide features 20 evidence-based recommendations designed to enhance public safety by ensuring firearms are stored securely, potentially preventing access by children and unauthorized individuals.
Currently, 26 states and Washington, D.C. have some form of safe storage laws, but the effectiveness of these laws varies significantly across jurisdictions. Research indicates that strong safe storage measures could lead to a 12 percent reduction in youth firearm suicides and a 13 percent reduction in unintentional deaths and injuries among children ages 0-14. With over half of U.S. gun owners reporting inadequate storage practices, this new guide offers vital resources to create laws that prioritize responsible gun ownership and ultimately save lives.
