Facebook Moves to Tackle Illegal Gun Sales

Facebook announces it will delete posts that facilitate illegal gun sales or circumvent background check laws, a decision driven by increasing pressure from gun control advocates, including New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The new policy, which will extend to Instagram, aims to prevent users from offering firearms for sale without following legal protocols, responding to a significant demand for stricter regulations on social media platforms.

Despite existing systems that limit the promotion of illegal goods, Facebook recognizes the challenge of balancing content moderation with user expression. The policy will specifically target posts indicating an intent to evade legal requirements, responding to mounting concerns about online transactions that could lead to dangerous individuals obtaining firearms. Notably, petitions from advocacy groups like Moms Demand Action have amassed over 230,000 signatures, highlighting the widespread public demand for these changes.
