Fairfax County has commenced its Deer Management Archery Program on September 6, aimed at reducing the local white-tailed deer population. This initiative, which has taken place since 2010, is overseen by the police department and the Fairfax County Park Authority, and accounted for 91% of the 547 deer harvested in 2024.
The archery season, running through February 14, requires participants to meet specific training and safety standards, including passing a criminal background check. In previous seasons, the program has helped mitigate issues such as deer-related accidents and environmental damage, with no new cases of Chronic Wasting Disease detected in the last hunting season.
