Family of 15-year-old sues Akron over police shooting

The family of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Akron, claiming officer Davon Fields used excessive force when he shot Tucker three times, including twice in the back. This incident, which occurred on November 28, 2024, has drawn significant public scrutiny and protests, especially after Tucker, a student at North High School, was found to pose no immediate threat at the time of the shooting.

The lawsuit highlights systemic failures in police training and accuses the department of bias, noting that over half of fatal police shootings in Akron since 2000 have involved Black individuals, despite this demographic comprising only 31% of the population. With critical details, such as Fields failing to activate his body camera during the incident, the ongoing legal battle raises questions about police conduct and accountability in the community.
