Family of Sam Sharpe Retains Attorney After Police Shooting

The family of Sam Sharpe Jr., a Milwaukee man shot and killed by police during the Republican National Convention, has hired civil rights attorney Nate Cade to investigate the incident. Cade is currently reviewing investigation materials as he considers filing a federal civil suit against the five Columbus, Ohio officers involved, who fired 23 shots after encountering Sharpe with knives.

Sharpe’s death has prompted scrutiny of police conduct and policies, especially regarding the use of out-of-town officers during major events. The Milwaukee County District Attorney decided not to charge the officers, citing rapid escalation and self-defense, while the family claims the officers lacked context about the situation leading to the confrontation. A community gathering is set to honor Sharpe’s memory and discuss his impact within the unhoused community he served.
