Feds Reassign Agents from Gun Crime to Immigration Focus

In a significant shift in federal priorities, thousands of law enforcement agents have been reassigned from investigating gun-related crimes to assist with immigration enforcement efforts. A review of data reveals that around 23,000 federal officers are now directed to patrol cities and manage immigration issues, a move particularly affecting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), where up to 80% of special agents have been diverted to these new assignments.

This realignment raises questions about the impact on gun crime investigations as federal resources are stretched thinner. The Trump administration has not disclosed the duration of these reassigned duties, leaving communities and law enforcement officials concerned about the potential rise in gun violence due to decreased oversight on weapon-related offenses.
