Feds Target Straw Gun Purchases in New Orleans

New Orleans law enforcement officials launch a federal campaign targeting ‘straw’ gun purchases that enable prohibited individuals, including felons and domestic abusers, to acquire firearms. The initiative, dubbed “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy,” seeks to raise awareness about the stiff penalties associated with such purchases, which can include prison sentences of up to 15 years, or 25 years if the firearm is used in a crime.

At a recent news conference, Joshua Jackson, head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in New Orleans, emphasized the campaign’s goal of maintaining a recent two-year decline in violent crime. With reported decreases in both illegal gun cases and firearm seizures, officials urge residents to resist pressure from those seeking a straw purchase, as it poses risks not only to public safety but also to their own freedom.
