Finland to Raise Reservists’ Age Limit to Strengthen Army

The Finnish government proposes to raise the upper age limit for army reservists from 60 to 65, a change intended to bolster the nation’s wartime military capacity by adding approximately 125,000 troops by 2031. Currently, Finland maintains a military reserve of around 870,000 individuals, with this new policy aiming to expand that number to one million, reflecting heightened security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen emphasizes that this initiative not only enhances national defense capabilities but also allows a broader segment of the population to engage in military service. With compulsory military service for men and voluntary service for women, this adjustment illustrates Finland’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces in a challenging geopolitical landscape.
