As of mid-May 2023, TSA officers at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) have confiscated 15 firearms, four of which were taken just this month. This alarming trend continues from 2022, which marked a record of 49 firearms intercepted at this airport— an increase that raises concerns about passenger awareness and airport safety.
Nationally, the TSA reports 1,508 firearms were discovered at airport security checkpoints in the first quarter of 2023, over 93% of which were loaded. This represents a notable 10.3% increase compared to the same period last year, despite the TSA’s ongoing efforts to remind travelers about the prohibition of firearms in carry-on luggage. With summer travel on the rise, experts warn that the number of intercepted firearms may reach new heights in 2023, compelling travelers to reconsider their packing habits.
