Florida Republicans in the House and Senate have introduced bills that would lower the minimum age for purchasing rifles and long guns to 18, seeking to repeal a law established after the 2018 Parkland school shooting. The bills, filed by Sen. Jay Collins and Rep. Michelle Salzman, come amid ongoing legal challenges to the existing age restriction, which was put in place following the tragic incident that claimed 17 lives.
The proposed change would not affect federal regulations prohibiting those under 21 from buying handguns. Additionally, a lawsuit from the National Rifle Association against the age restriction law remains pending at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, making the outcome of potential legislative changes uncertain. The legislation will be considered in the upcoming session beginning March 4, highlighting the ongoing national conversation around gun control and youth access to firearms.
