David Randall Cocking, a 48-year-old man, is being referred for a competency evaluation following his charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of a 71-year-old woman at her Flushing home. The victim was discovered deceased during a welfare check by police on July 11, spurring an investigation that led to Cocking’s arrest on July 15.
Genesee District Court Judge Jeffrey Clothier approved the evaluation, which will determine if Cocking is mentally fit to stand trial. This evaluation is critical; it will assess whether he understands the legal proceedings against him and can assist in his defense. The results are expected to be reviewed by the court on September 30, as the case continues to unfold.
