FN Herstal officially ends production of the iconic SCAR series after 15 years, following its selection by U.S. Special Operations Command as a premium weapon system. On October 16, 2025, the company revealed that the final run of SCAR models, including the SCAR 16S, 17S, and 20S, has been completed for commercial sales, although military models will still be manufactured.
The SCAR rifle gained notoriety during the War on Terror, touted as a possible replacement for the M4 carbine, yet its military adoption was limited due to performance issues. Despite a hefty price tag of $3,000 to $4,000 for civilian versions, its legacy continues, with FN promising support for current owners even as they explore new rifle developments for future military contracts.
