Former Officer Joseph Mensah Testifies in Civil Trial

Former Wauwatosa Police officer Joseph Mensah testifies in a civil trial concerning the 2020 shooting of 17-year-old Alvin Cole, claiming he acted in self-defense. Mensah, now a detective with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, asserts that contrary to other officers’ testimonies, Cole posed a threat at the time, contradicting claims that he was incapacitated on the ground.

The trial, which has revealed stark disagreements among officers, raises critical questions about police protocols and use of force. Mensah acknowledged his emotional turmoil during the incident, stating, “I didn’t want to do it,” as conflicting narratives from law enforcement about the moments leading up to the shooting continue to unfold in court.
